At Thirlestane Castle, we want to make your stay as personal and memorable as possible as you enjoy your time in the Scottish Borders. To compliment your stay, we offer a range of experiences to make your time with us even more memorable.
The following options are available to all accommodation guests who book a stay at Thirlestane Castle. These can be included in your initial booking or added at a later date by logging into the 'Guest Area' (details on booking confirmaiton emai). Please note, that we need at least 48 hours notice to arrange your experience(s) for you, so please bear this in mind when planning your stay.
Guided Tour with a Member of the Maitland Family
Hear what it was like to grow up at the castle from Edward Maitland-Carew as he takes you around the family home he still lives in. Learn about his forebears and their links to Scottish and UK History as you tour the historic building. (+£180 donation to Thirlestane Castle Trust per group. Subject to availability)
Guided Rides For Equine Enthusiasts
Designed for experienced riders only, these guided rides will lead you through some of the most spectacular countryside in the Scottish Borders. You will follow in the footsteps of the Lauder Common Riding - one of the oldest equestrian festivals in the world. This ancient route has been ridden since the 16th Century where residents patrolled the boundaries of their settlement on horse back, defending against fearsome marauders. We offer a two hour and four hour rides. (From £130 per person)
Why not turn your stay into a spa break with one of our 'Spa-to-You' packages. Our therapist will come to your apartment and spend at least two hours pampering you with your choice of treatments. (From £175 for a 2 hour experience)
Let us do the shopping for you before you get to the castle. We have a range of delicious food hampers to make your stay even easier. The produce is all sourced from local suppliers and will be waiting in your apartment for when you arrive. Options include a breakfast hamper, butchers pack or fruit and vegetable basket.
Bouquet of Flowers
If you are celebrating while staying then we can arrange for a beautiful bouquet of flowers to be waiting for you. Our displays use locally sourced blooms, each is unique and handmade especially for you. (From £45.00)
Our award-winning caterers will work with you to provide perfect menu. Our chefs can either cook for you in your apartment, serve you in the Victorian Kitchen or, for a real show-stopper, help you create a 3-course dinner in the castle’s portrait-lined State Dining Room. (Groups Only)
Enjoy a traditional Scottish welcome by having a bagpiper play for you as you arrive at the castle. Guests have also enjoyed the piper on departure and he is available to play in the Rose Garden during your stay (£75.00)
Whisky Tasting & Distillery Tour
Our whisky expert will take you through a selection of regional whiskies, letting you explore the differences with each and giving you the opportunity to learn about the production of Scotland’s favourite tipple. (Price on request. From £250 for group of 6)
Enjoy a Private Tour of The Borders Distillery led by the Distillery Manager followed by an exclusive tasting of five whiskies. (£35 per person based on a minimum of 2 people)
Exclusive Tour of the Borders
We can arrange tailored and unique chauffeur driven experiences through the Scottish Borders. This could include options such as mill tours, behind-the-scenes visits and shopping. These experiences can be anything from a full-day tour to just a few hours. (Price on request)
We can arrange a number of outdoor activities in the grounds of the castle including Tree Climbing, Archery, Survival Skills and Tomahawk. (Prices from 100 per group of 4)
