The Sculleries

Formerly the sculleries for the main castle, this part of the South Wing has been beautifully transformed into a high-end one-bedroom apartment. Accessed from the mezzanine of the castle’s Cobbled Courtyard, guests look out over the castle gardens to the rear with double-height windows throughout. The traditional flagstone floor in the hallway is a reminder of the apartment’s past, as is the authentic mangle which has been repurposed into a beautiful hallstand.

The soft greens of the gardens outside have inspired the restoration of the space and link the bedroom with the natural beauty of its surroundings. The stunning sleigh bed and wardrobe were used by the Maitland family in their private rooms. Heavy, luxurious fabric frames the three tall windows as the room is flooded with dappled light from the nearby trees. Guests can enjoy the ultimate luxury in the extremely spacious bathroom and relax in the free-standing roll-top bath.

A warm and cosy feel is created in the sitting room with the deep coral walls and royal blue accents. As in the bedroom, a large portrait from the castle collection reflects the grandeur of the castle and brings a sense of history to the space. Guests are made to feel part of the Thirlestane family with several personal photos in the hallway showing the Maitland family competing in the show-jumping and eventing competitions at several Olympics.

Completed in early 2019, this newly-refurbished apartment offers a cosy retreat for those wishing to explore the Scottish Borders.

This charming one-bedroom apartment is set in the heart of the South Wing. It takes its name from the moor behind the castle that is resplendent in purple heather during late summer and early Autumn. Glenburnie was also the name of a horse bred by the Maitland family which went on to become European Champion in three-day eventing and which was ridden by local eventer Ian Stark. A portrait of the horse is reflected back into the sitting room by a large mirror in the hallway.

The spacious bedroom has been finished with gentle greens and accents of pink and red creating a calming space. Statement pieces of furniture from the castle collection have been used including the dressing table which was formally the base for a spinet harpsicord.

Once the castle’s Housekeeper’s Room, the original Victorian range in the sitting room has been sympathetically restored with soft, modern lighting to add to the relaxing ambience. This range was long forgotten about and uncovered during the renovation. The open-plan space is dominated by large portraits by George and John Scougall from the castle collection featuring two of the castle’s forbears.

Finished in early 2019 this apartment is one of the most recently-refurbished in the castle and provides a luxurious, romantic base from which to explore the Scottish Borders.

The Earl & Countess

This apartment was formerly the private quarters of the 14th Earl and Countess of Lauderdale and most recently the castle nurseries. It has been exquisitely restored into a three-bedroom apartment, perfect for small groups and families. Accessed by one of the castle’s grand sweeping staircases, its position on the second floor means there are fabulous views of the parkland from the large full height windows.

A dramatic colour scheme has been used throughout to compliment the statement items of furniture and paintings that have been borrowed from the castle collection.

The coral walls of the master bedroom highlight the vintage-style bed hanging while its luxurious ensuite is a calming shade of Wedgewood blue. Original bedheads from when the castle was used as a hospital in the First World War complete the room. The bold colours and intricate Schumacher ‘Chiang Mei Dragon’ fabric in the second bedroom offers a nod to the castle’s links with Asia. The 15th Countess’s father was J. J. Bell-Irving, a very successful Hong Kong banker and merchant, and he brought many items back with him which can be seen throughout the castle. The opulence continues in the ensuite shower room with vintage gold taps. The high ceilings throughout the apartment enable a grand four poster bed to be used in the third bedroom. The large windows frame stunning views across the castle estate.

The main reception room is an open-plan space dominated by a large gilt mirror that until recently hung in the State Drawing Room of the castle. The chandelier casts a soft light over the portraits, one of which is by John Scougall, and the bespoke wallpaper panels featuring designs from an historic antique tapestry. Watch the sunset in the evening over the parkland from the large west-facing bay window.

With hints of vibrant colour on the walls and historic furnishings, the Earl & Countess give you a stunning castle experience. Completed in January 2019 this is one of the newest apartments available at Thirlestane Castle which can also be taken in conjunction with our other apartments to sleep larger groups.

Big Houses in the Borders

Thirlestane Castle is a member of the Big Houses in the Scottish Borders, but sadly we won't be able to welcome you to our beautiful property this year as we have made the very difficult decision to not open to the day visitor as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. We plan to re-open the castle, tearoom and grounds in May 2021. We look forward to welcoming you then.

Big Houses in the Scottish Borders is a group of eleven castles and historic homes across the Scottish Borders that work together to promote and represent the vast array of beautiful properties across the region.

Set amongst breathtaking scenery, there is a wealth of historic houses to view and grounds and gardens to explore. The properties that are part of the group have fascinating historical links and each has its own unique charm.

The Lauderdale

This one-bedroom apartment in the South Wing offers a luxury escape to visitors who wish to stay in a genuinely historic Scottish castle. Once the Butler’s Apartment, the space has been transformed into a well-proportioned suite with views over the extensive parkland.

The baronial style that is evident in the castle’s architecture has been reflected in the bedroom with the extravagant use of the Maitland family’s tartan for the statement bed and other soft furnishings. The 3rd Earl of Lauderdale adopted the blue and green tartan that belonged to his wife Elizabeth Lauder’s family, and the Lauder tartan has been used as the Maitland family tartan ever since. The grandeur continues into the bathroom where a luxurious free-standing roll-top bath takes up the centre of the room.

In the open-plan living, dining and kitchen area the natural colouring gives a relaxed but sumptuous feel. An oil painting from the School of Canaletto depicting a view of Venice has been loaned from the castle collection as have other items of furniture.

A charming, established apartment where guests can get a feel for what it is like to live in a Scottish castle.

Thirlestane Castle is just 35 minutes south of Edinburgh and is easily accessible just off the A68 at Lauder. The main car park has space for 80 cars or numerous larger vehicles. There are also several grassed areas where several thousand cars can be parked.

The Thirlestane Castle Caravan Park can also provide accommodation for participants with campsite and touring pitches available.

To see the areas available for hire please download our Facilities Plan which has further details of area and capacities. Our Events Brochure is also available to download here.

Private Dining

Thirlestane has many exciting dining options for your event – from grand State Rooms for a more formal experience to underground vaulted cellars and original kitchens for something more relaxed.

With a series of recently refurbished spaces we can also offer some unique areas for drinks receptions and after dinner entertainment.

We work with the finest caterers from Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders to make sure your event leaves a lasting impression on your guests.

STATE DRAWING ROOM

For the grandest of occasions, the State Drawing Room offers opulent surroundings. The breath-taking 17th century ceilings are by the same craftsman as the ones in the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

STATE DINING ROOM

Lined with portraits of the Maitland family, the State Drawing Room is perhaps the most formal setting at the castle. Banquet like the former inhabitants around a table laden with silverware as their portraits surround you.

VICTORIAN KITCHEN

For a more rustic, contemporary event, our newly refurbished Old Kitchen offers a less formal but equally memorable venue for your meal. The original Victorian range will provide a talking point for your guests while they eat.

COBBLED COURTYARD

Our Cobbled Courtyard is the perfect alfresco dining space on a summer's evening. If you don't trust the weather we can add a transparent marquee to create a unique conservatory space

VAULTED CELLAR

If you are looking for an atmospheric space for dinner then we can offer our Vaulted Cellars. The former coal storage for the castle is now a unusual space with an original cobbled floor and vaulted ceiling.

OLD SERVANTS' HALL

The Old Servant's Hall is used by visitors to the castle on open days but can be hired for exclusive use at other times if you are looking for a more cosy setting.

Corporate Hire

Thirlestane Castle is an inspiring building set in peaceful surroundings yet is just 35 minutes south of Edinburgh and one hour from Edinburgh Airport. We work with award-winning suppliers and can help organise the perfect corporate event for your organisation.

The castle can offer a number of different spaces each with a unique style and there are more than 100 acres of parkland for outdoor events. From our inspiring State Dining Room lined with one of the largest collections of family portraits in the country to our rustic Victorian Kitchen where the original 19th century range takes pride of place. We can help you decide the right area for your group of delegates and design a bespoke proposal for your day whether that be a Board Away Day, Launch Party or Incentive Event.

To complete your day, we can arrange whisky tasting in our Vaulted Cellars, archery on the Front Lawn or perhaps a falconry display in our gardens. We also have eight luxury bedrooms so key members of staff can extend their time at the castle.

MEETINGS AND CONFERENCES

The State Dining Room with its portrait lined walls is a dramatic and inspiring space for conferences or meetings. We can provide additional equipment on request and organise catering from our panel of top caterers. For smaller events, you can hire the newly-refurbished Victorian Kitchen.

AWARDS DINNERS

Celebrate your company's achievements with a grand dinner in the elegant State Drawing Room. We work with award-winning caterers who can plan a fitting meal for your guests. For larger events, enjoy a drinks reception in the castle and then celebrate in a bespoke marquee in our garden.

INCENTIVE DAYS

Our extensive parkland lends itself to a variety of outdoor activities for just a handful of guests right up to several thousand. We work with some of the best providers out there and can organise diverse activities such as archery, highland games or whisky tasting. For a visual spectacle we can put on a jousting display, organise a bagpiper or give your team a hands-on experience of birds of prey.

PRODUCT LAUNCHES & EXHIBITIONS

The diverse spaces and our proximity to the capital make the castle a distinctive option to launch your next product. We have several areas where exhibitions can be set up and have ample parking on site for all your guests. Our enclosed Cobbled Courtyard has vehicle access and the unusual Vaulted Cellar which leads off it offer a lot of scope for an exclusive event.

Whatever your event, escape the city and the corporate world to relax in the sumptuous surroundings of Thirlestane Castle in the Scottish Borders.

All events are unique so please contact us to discuss further what you may require. You can email us on enquiries@thirlestanecastle.co.uk or give us a call on +44 1578 722430.

Welcome to Thirlestane Castle

A magnificent 16th Century Castle set in a quiet meadow landscape, you will find us distinctly different. Family home of the Duke of Lauderdale, Thirlestane Castle is one of the oldest and finest castles in Scotland. It still remains a family home to the Maitland family today. During the summer months Thirlestane is open to the day visitor and for group tours. Thirlestane also makes itself and its setting available for corporate events throughout the year, by prior arrangement. Visitors come from far and wide to be inspired, educated, innovated, create and even dance the night away, as our castle becomes yours.

"Preserving the Castle for today, tomorrow and for the future is a huge challenge for all those involved which is why more than ever we look to the public to help support us simply by coming to visit and spending time here with their families. It is what makes everything we do so worthwhile.."

Terms & Conditions

Covid-19 Booking Guarentee Terms

In light of the current situation we have updated our booking terms to give you more flexibility and reassurance.

The following terms apply under our Covid-19 Booking Guarantee. These terms apply to individual bookings in our apartments. This policy supersedes our standard cancellation policy which is usually in place. All other Terms and Conditions relating to accommodation at Thirlestane Castle are unchanged.

Our Covid-19 Booking Guarantee Terms will be in place as long as COVID-19 continues to result in travel restrictions from the Scottish or UK Government.

20% flexible deposit
As part of our guarantee, we require a 20% deposit at the time of booking. This deposit is flexible in that if your stay cannot go ahead for reasons relating to COVID-19, we are happy to transfer the deposit to a new date. This means you will not miss out should the Scottish or UK Government guidance prevent you from coming to stay at Thirlestane Castle on your original dates of choice.

Balance Payment 21 days before stay
A balance payment for the full amount will be due 21 days before your booking starts while Covid-19 continues to disrupt travel and cause uncertainty. If the situation is still not clear at that point (e.g. the Scottish Government or the UK Government is due to make a new announcement), we will be happy to defer this payment for a few more days, including right up to 72 hours before date of arrival if needed. None of our guests will have to pay a balance for a holiday which is not guaranteed to go ahead. We will refer to Scottish Government guidance in making decisions about whether stays can go ahead.

*Please note - bookings made within 21 days of the arrival date are required to pay the full stay amount at the time of booking, however 20% of this cost will be treated as a deposit, and your booking will still be treated in line with each term in our Covid-19 Booking Guarantee.

Flexible Re-booking Policy
In the event of cancellation due to either the Scottish or UK Government’s Coronavirus restrictions, or if you are self-isolating, you will have the flexibility to move the booking to alternative available dates within 18 months of the start date of your planned stay. There will be no additional charges, but if there is a difference in price (e.g. you move from an off-peak booking time to a peak booking time) the difference will be payable by you. This “Flexible Rebooking Policy” is only available for cancellations related to Covid-19 restrictions, and is not available for cancellations relating to any other reason.

Cancellations
We are not able to offer deposit refunds, however we are able to offer deposit transfers to new dates.
If you fail to pay your balance 21 days prior to your booking start date, and you haven’t got in touch with us to discuss the situation, the deposit may be deemed to be forfeited by us and the booking cancelled. In such an event the flexible rebooking policy will no longer apply.

Insurance
Whether travelling from abroad or within the UK, we always reccommend to our guests to take out holiday insurance.

Updated: Tuesday 8 September 2020.

Maitlands & History

The history of the ground upon which Thirlestane Castle now stands dates back to at least the 12th Century and later a large Border fort was built on the site to defend the approach to Edinburgh from the south.

The central part of the present castle was completed in 1590, remodelled in the 1670s and then enlarged in the 1840s.

Throughout its long history, Thirlestane has belonged to the Maitland family, one of the most famous in Scotland.  The Maitlands came to Britain in 1066 with William the Conqueror and settled in Northumberland.  In about 1260, Sir Richard Maitland married Avicia daughter and sole heiress to Thomas du Thirlestane.  It was this marriage that bought the lands of Thirlestane and others into the ownership of the Maitland family.  The ruined remains of the family home at that time can still be seen two miles from the castle on the A697.

Through military service and their contributions to the law and the arts, the Maitlands gained increasingly in power and influence.  In 1590, John Maitland, whose elder brother Sir William Maitland of Lethington had served as Secretary to Mary, Queen of Scots, became Lord Chancellor of Scotland.  His son was later created 1st Earl of Lauderdale in 1624.

Today the castle is still the home of the Maitland family.  For further information about the Maitlands and the history of the castle download the pdf below.
